Anki is an open-source flashcards app that uses spaced repetition algorithms and active recall to help you remember information fast and encode it to your long-term memory. Based on my experience, along with thousands of Language learners, Medical Students, and Doctors, Anki works amazingly great. Anki combines the Leitner system for initial learning, Active Recall and Spaced repetition for long-term memorization. To download Anki on your computer, head over to AnkiWeb and download Anki.
I prefer to use version 2. By doing it this way, you would be learning the subject as a WHOLE unit via Interleavingrather than as fragmented topics. There are plenty more card types to choose from, which varies in purpose but are rather restrictive in nature. Why tags? Because it simplifies everything. Number 4 in the picture for your convenience. Now, creating that card, you should notice that the Tag name you entered in the Tags field did not go away.
The second method is the Card Browser. When I started using Anki, I believed it was too complex for me to understand and thus, maximize. There are only a vital few features you should know when using Anki.
By the way, I have to tell you that for subjects that require concepts, I break them down into more questions that test my understanding. Basically, for conceptual information, you have to encourage your understanding of the material. You know how to answer the card but cannot apply the information anywhere else.
Take a look at what I did to my previous example. Break them down as much as possible.
Break a concept as much as possible. State each. This reduces resistance.
Compare that to doing a mini-brain dump for each card—it gets pretty tiring easily. Before I begin, head over to Anki Sign Up and register for an account. This will allow automatic syncing of your deck to the AnkiWeb servers—which allows you to sync your cards to ALL devices. When the answer shows up, you are given choices below to choose from: Again, Good, Easy. Using Anki default settings, Anki will show the card again after a certain amount depending on how difficult it was for you to recall the card.
You press Again when you failed to recall the answer, Good when you successfully recall the answer, and Easy when you recall the answer in an instant. You can use shortcuts as shown below:. Especially once the card has graduatedpressing Easy will make the card show less often and pressing Hard will make it show more often. Memory works every single day.
Since Anki works to combat the decay of information in your brain, it makes sense to use Anki to review every day. Reviewing cards every now and then adds up to your total—leaving you with fewer cards to study during your allotted study time.
When you do a custom study session, you can select cards from specific Tags in a certain Deck. No hard feelings.There are more ways to learn kanji then I can count.
There are flashcards that you can use. It seems like a book or a resource on studying kanji is made available every week. So, it is very easy to get confused as to what is the best way to get the job done. Should you use an app? Should you practice writing kanji until your arms fall off? A lot of people get lost in this mess. To make matters worse, the JLPT divides out content by levels. They seem to be very grammar heavy and vocabulary and kanji light for the first level, N5.
This has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that you only have to study a rather limited set of kanji around And eventually, you will have to re-learn these words with the proper kanji with them. If you choose to study them without the kanji. At least, expose yourself to them.
That way you can actually read what you have learned. It is after all, more efficient to learn kanji and call it a day. There are a ton of other things you have to master for the N5 level, like the basic use of particles, that can take a lot of time and frustration. So, cutting kanji learning short for now makes a lot of good sense.

Of course, on the other hand, if the JLPT included all the kanji, it would be just that much more tougher. But, I think they could strike a happy balance by including furigana on those words that use more difficult kanji.
Because if you are used to dealing with native Japanese with kanji, reading hiragana is quite difficult. When I send my N5 materials to my proofreaders I have to rewrite it with kanji so that they can check it.
I meticulously went over every word and definition to try to come up with the clearest deck that will not only prepare you for the JLPT but also for future Japanese learning. A lot of you have emailed me telling me how useful it was in preparing you for the big test, which is always good to hear. This should help you to master the words and kanji in a shorter time. The deck is now available an AnkiWeb. If you are using the N5 deck now to study, you might have to restart your learning due to some modifications I had to make to the deck.
I personally use all of these on a daily basis and highly recommend them. The update is now available at Ankiweb for download. I hope to make it the best deck available for studying Japanese. You must download these decks to your computerNOT to your phone. You must also have Anki installed on your computer. Once you download them your computer that has Anki installed, open them. They will open directly into your Anki app. Now that they are on your computer, you can sync your Anki account with your phone so that you can access them on the go. If you do not want to use these, feel free to delete them by sorting your cards by that specific tag, highlighting all the cards under that tag, and simply deleting them.
